Spielberg had never screened a film at TIFF, but Rian Johnson is a veteran. Three years ago he premiered ‘Knives Out’ at the Princess of Wales in Toronto and is back tonight with its sequel. “Glass Onion” A movie that really follows the sequel model of the follow-up’s “bigger, faster, more” theory. It’s not meant to knock as much as it sounds, but some would argue that the first film was more airy and that whodunits shouldn’t have turned up at 140 minutes. But there’s a lot to savor in this film, with many sharp turns, beautiful settings, clever dialogue, and playful performances. In many ways it’s a “more fun” movie than the first. You can feel the joy everyone on set had when they stepped into the puzzle of Johnson’s script and acted out their own creation.

do not worry. No spoilers to follow.

“Glass Onion” opens with a beautiful set-up. A tech billionaire named Miles Bronn (Edward Norton) invites his old friend to a murder mystery party on a Greek island. He calls them “Disruptors”. People who don’t follow the rules and often get into trouble. Model Birdie Jay (Kate Hudson) makes a mistake with her social media and has her cell phone stolen by her assistant Peg (Jessica Henwick). There’s Duke girlfriend Cody (Dave Bautista), a macho girlfriend Twitch streamer who likes to talk about boobs and guns and who takes her girlfriend (Madeline Klein) on trips. Her name is Whiskey. There’s Claire DeBella (Kathryn Hahn), the politician Miles financed to do his bidding. And then there’s tech guru Lionel Toussaint (Leslie Odom, Jr.), Miles faxing out crazy ideas in the middle of the night, hoping Lionel will make them happen. Oh, and there’s also Cassandra Brando (the scene-stealing Janelle Monae). It’s the other half of a company that made billions before Bronn sold her. Finally, an unexpected guest appears at the party. Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig), the man Miles claims he didn’t even invite.

The plot description ends here, but there are so many twists and turns in this movie that it’s honestly going to be hard to spoil it in less than 1,000 words. Even the identity of the victim (or potential victim) is unexpected, let alone the final results of Blanc’s latest investigation. Needless to say, this is another case where everyone on this island wants someone else dead on this island. It illuminates once again that wealth and fame do not equate to intelligence and decency. The first movie was about old money and the second was about new money.
